Tragedy strikes on June 16, 2012: News came in that Charlie's son died instantly in a single vehicle car crash. Charlie was touring a National Park that day when
the news arrived. Charlie was devastated with the news. "Aren't your kids suppose to outlast you?" Charlie says. Charlie would have to head home and catch the next
plane to Denver and deal with all of this. Charlie was not one for flying in airplanes, but he really had no choice in this case. Charlie just had the divorced
finalized in January of this year and was starting to regroup when this news arrived just six months later. This would be a dark time in the life of the Godfather
and there was really no way around it. He knew that this meant seeing both of his exes at the same time as well. When you have kids, you are always tied to the
partner that you had the kids with plus any future partners that became step moms and step dads. I lost contact with Charlie during this time as he was so busy
meeting up with the old collegues, friends and family. There is this big time of coming together to say the goodbyes and then everyone just goes back to their normal
lives and their routines almost like nothing ever happened. Divorces can be pretty nasty with the inheritance settlements that follow. A good reminder right now for
all of us to prepare our wills with some good estate planning. When Charlie returned to Canada, he was still trying to come to grips with what had happened. Charlie
had lost both of his parents along the way some time ago and now this added to the pile. Charlie says that with the loss of the loved ones, there is just something
in the air that is missing. A silence. A piece of your life just seems to dissolve leaving you to deal with what is left. There was nothing that you can do except be
thankful for the memories that you get to keep.
